Montreal’s Restaurant of the Week: Pizzeria Magpie

📍 Location: 16 Rue Maguire, Montreal, QC

Menu:

Pizzeria Magpie blends classic Italian craftsmanship with a distinctly Montreal touch, serving up some of the city’s best wood-fired pizzas. With a focus on high-quality, seasonal ingredients, the menu highlights bold flavors, simple techniques, and a warm, convivial dining experience.

Signature Pizzas:

Baked in a traditional wood-fired oven, Magpie’s pizzas feature a beautifully blistered crust and carefully selected toppings:

  • Margherita – A timeless favorite with San Marzano tomato sauce, fresh fior di latte, and fragrant basil.
  • Prosciutto & Arugula – A perfect mix of salty and fresh, with shaved Parmesan and olive oil.
  • Goat Cheese & Caramelized Onion – A rich, tangy combination elevated by roasted red peppers.
  • Bianca – A cheese-lover’s dream with a creamy base, fresh herbs, and a drizzle of olive oil.

Appetizers & Sides:

  • Meatballs in Tomato Sauce – A house specialty, slow-cooked to perfection.
  • Fresh Oysters – A rotating selection, always served fresh.
  • Kale & Parmesan Salad – A bright, balanced dish for a refreshing start.

Cocktails & Wine:

Pizzeria Magpie keeps things interesting with a well-curated wine list, featuring private imports and natural selections, plus a rotating seasonal cocktail menu that complements the food perfectly.

History & Ambiance:

Opened in 2010, Pizzeria Magpie was born out of a passion for pizza and an unexpected gift—a wood-fired oven that inspired the owners to launch their own pizzeria. The name “Magpie” is a play on its location on Maguire Street and the word “pie,” a nod to its specialty. The restaurant’s warm, rustic decor, with dim lighting and exposed brick, makes it an inviting space for casual nights out.

Cost Rating: $$ (Moderate)

With pizzas averaging between $18-$25 and appetizers around $10-$15, Pizzeria Magpie offers excellent quality at a fair price. A meal with drinks typically ranges from $30 to $50 per person.

Why You Should Visit:

  • Top-tier wood-fired pizza in a cozy Mile End setting.
  • Fresh, locally sourced ingredients with a seasonal menu.
  • A fantastic spot for date nights or group gatherings.

Muzique Nightclub to Close After Nearly Two Decades

After nearly two decades as a cornerstone of Montreal’s nightlife, Muzique nightclub on St-Laurent Boulevard is set to close its doors in February 2025. Since its opening in 2009, Muzique has been renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and high-energy music, hosting world-class DJs such as Tiesto, Deadmau5, and the late Avicii.

Co-owner John Gumbley described the closure as “bittersweet,” attributing the decision to evolving nightlife trends and the aging of the venue. He noted that younger generations are partying less, impacting the clubbing industry. Additionally, prolonged road construction on St-Laurent Boulevard has disrupted traffic, contributing to a decline in foot traffic along the once-thriving artery.

Muzique’s legacy in Montreal’s nightlife scene is significant. It was a place where anything went—a bit raunchy, a lot of fun, and full of energy. The club’s closure marks the end of an era, reflecting the evolving dynamics of Montreal’s nightlife. As the venue prepares for its next chapter, it leaves behind nearly two decades of legendary nights and countless memories for those who walked through its doors.

Before closing, Muzique plans to host a final event in February, offering patrons one last opportunity to celebrate its storied history. The venue is set to undergo a complete transformation under new management, with plans for a full-scale renovation to modernize the club and appeal to a higher-end clientele.
