🍷 Restaurant of the Week: Île de France – Le 9e at the Eaton Centre

📍 Address: 1500 Boulevard Robert-Bourassa, 9th Floor, Montréal, QC H3A 3S8

After nearly three decades of anticipation, Île de France – Le 9e has returned to downtown Montréal, reclaiming its place as a symbol of elegance and history. Originally opened in 1931 and inspired by the grand dining rooms aboard the transatlantic ship Île de France, the restaurant was designed by famed architect Jacques Carlu at the request of Madame Eaton herself. Today, the space is back in full glory on the 9th floor of the Eaton Centre—an architectural gem protected under heritage laws, lovingly restored for a new generation.

Step inside and you’re transported: soaring ceilings, heritage décor, and a sweeping dining hall that blends nostalgia with modern refinement. With seating for around 100 guests, 30 at the bar, and two private salons, it’s both intimate and grand—a perfect setting for everyday elegance or a celebratory night out.

🍽️ What to Order

The menu is built on French classics reimagined with a Montréal twist, executed by chefs Derek Dammann and Liam Hopkins. Expect refined comfort with impeccable technique:

  • Steak Frites – perfectly cooked flank steak, already a house favorite.
  • Breaded Cod – light, crispy, and golden.
  • Beef or Salmon Tartare – fresh, flavorful, and beautifully plated.
  • House-Made Pasta – rich, decadent, and handmade by Kiera German.

🍹 Drinks to Match

The French Line bar, helmed by mixologist Andrew Whibley, offers sharp cocktails with flair, alongside a thoughtful wine list focusing on natural and minimal-intervention bottles for oenophiles seeking something special.

Why You Should Go

Because Île de France isn’t just another restaurant—it’s a rebirth of one of Montréal’s most iconic dining rooms. It’s history meeting modern dining culture, a chance to enjoy French gastronomy in one of the city’s most beautiful heritage spaces. Whether you’re there for brunch, a business lunch, or an evening to remember, Le 9e delivers both atmosphere and flavor in spades.
