🍱 Restaurant of the Week: Rouge Gorge

📍 Address: 1234 Avenue du Mont-Royal Est, Montréal, QC H2J 1Y2

Since opening its doors on March 1, 2015, Rouge Gorge has become an indispensable fixture on the Plateau Mont-Royal—a wine bar that has aged like a fine vintage, growing deeper and more beloved with each passing year. Born from the rich history of Laurent Farre and his late partner Alain Rochard, whose Montreal restaurant journey began with the opening of Continental in 1987, Rouge Gorge represents the culmination of decades of experience and a clear vision: a warm, unpretentious haven where wine takes center stage and the food is crafted to complement every sip.

The name itself is a poetic nod to the Parisian tavern where the characters from Marcel Carné’s classic film Les Enfants du Paradis used to gather—a fitting tribute to a place designed for conversation, connection, and the simple pleasures of the table.

One Address, Three Distinct Atmospheres

With its striking corner location at Mount Royal and Brébeuf, the restaurant is impossible to miss, wrapped in large windows that flood the space with natural light. The main floor decor, executed by the renowned Zébulon Perron (the visionary behind Montréal Plaza, Iberica, and countless other Montreal gems), strikes a perfect balance between industrial elements and intimate warmth. It’s comfortable, unpretentious, and utterly inviting—a space that beckons you to return again and again.

In summer, the pedestrianized Mount Royal Avenue transforms into one of the city’s most vibrant thoroughfares, and Rouge Gorge’s terrace becomes a front-row seat to the action. Packed with locals and visitors alike, it’s the perfect spot to soak in the late-day sun with a chilled glass of something special.

Descend to the basement, and you’ll discover an entirely different world. Originally a separate concept called Bar Royal, this intimate 65-seat lounge—also designed by Zébulon Perron—is now fully integrated into the Rouge Gorge experience. Open Thursday through Saturday, the space offers the same excellent wine and cocktail list and menu, with the added energy of a DJ spinning until the early hours. It’s available for private group events, offering a cozy, clandestine atmosphere perfect for late-night revelry.

🍽️ What to Order: A Seasonal Journey in Small Plates

The kitchen at Rouge Gorge turns out delicate, flavorful dishes designed for sharing, with a menu that changes seasonally to showcase the best ingredients. Portions are thoughtfully sized for nibbling and pairing with wine, though the hungrier among you will find plenty to love as well.

Les Desserts

  • Mi-cuit au chocolat, caramel fruit de la passion ($12): A warm, molten chocolate cake with a tangy passion fruit caramel that cuts through the richness—a perfect ending.

🍷 Drinks to Match

When Rouge Gorge opened, the neighborhood had restaurants with interesting wine lists, but no true wine bar. That gap has been filled spectacularly. The wine program is the heart and soul of the operation, featuring a superb selection of French bottles—including those from Vignoble du Loup Blanc, the personal project of the late Alain Rochard—alongside exceptional offerings from across Europe, North America, and a strong representation of Quebec’s finest natural wines. This curation has earned the bar a well-deserved spot on Tastet’s lists of the best wine bars in Montreal and the best places to drink natural wine.

The cocktail menu, designed by the talented Manu Ruiz, is equally impressive, offering creative libations that stand proudly alongside the wine list.

Why You Should Go

Because Rouge Gorge is the complete package—a rare gem where every element works in harmony. The stunning, multi-level design by Zébulon Perron creates distinct moods for every occasion. The deeply knowledgeable wine program offers discoveries with every visit. And the kitchen consistently delivers inventive, delicious food that enhances rather than overshadows the liquid offerings.

Whether you’re stopping for a quick oyster and a glass of something natural after work, settling in for a long, late-night catch-up with friends in the cozy basement, or claiming a spot on one of the city’s most vibrant summer terraces, Rouge Gorge feels like it’s always exactly where you want to be.
