🍱 Restaurant of the Week: Othym

📍 Address: 1430 Rue Atateken, Montréal, QC H2L 3L2 (Village)

Since opening its doors in 2004, Othym has been a cherished fixture in the Village and one of Montreal’s most essential bring-your-own-wine destinations. Now, after a transformative move to a larger, brighter space on Atateken Street, the restaurant has entered an exciting new chapter. Under the passionate leadership of chef Noé Lainesse and his partner Kevin Duguay, Othym has deepened its commitment to local, responsible, and creative cuisine—earning them the 2022 Aliments du Québec “Restaurateur of the Year” award. This is not just a new location; it is a refined expression of their vision.

Atmosphere & Décor

The new space, designed by interior firm Clairoux, was built on a principle of “recovery.” The bar was crafted using slate and bricks from the old location, while tables and chairs made the move as well. Tablecloths are made from fabric scraps from a local designer, and light fixtures were crafted from damaged plates.

The result is a bright, airy room (seating 70) that retains the soul and essence of the Othym from 20 years ago, proving that sustainability and style can go hand in hand.

🍽️ What to Order: Logical, Seasonal, and Nearly Zero-Waste

Chef Noé Lainesse, trained at London’s world-renowned zero-waste restaurant Silo, leads a kitchen that strives to reduce its footprint as much as possible. Vegetables are the star of the menu, though there are always meat or fish dishes available. Nothing is wasted: duck leftovers become garum, crab carcasses infuse oil, and edible flowers are grown right in the dining room.

The menu changes daily, but the philosophy is constant: logical, seasonal cuisine sourced from an extraordinary network of local producers.

Sample Menu Structure (Three-Service Experience):

Othym’s menu consists of small plates, and they suggest a three-service experience per person to fully appreciate the range of flavours.

Recent Highlight Dishes:

  • Bourgots (Baie-Comeau): Served in a warm salad with kohlrabi brunoise, wild garlic, and breadcrumbs—a taste of the Gaspésie coast.
  • Arctic Char (Raised in Ahuntsic-Cartierville): Served on a bed of sautéed eggplant and fennel in an airy dashi, with nasturtium leaves—a truly hyper-local fish story.
  • Oyster Mushrooms (Handpicked in Brossard): Thinly sliced and placed on a spiced semolina infused with crab oil—a vegetarian dish of remarkable depth.
  • Duck (from Canard Goulu in Saint-Apollinaire): A regular feature, prepared with creativity and respect.
  • Lamb (from Trouvailles Gourmandes in Roxton Falls): Another staple, sourced from a trusted local farm.

A Network of Local Heroes:

Othym’s menu reads like a who’s who of Quebec artisanal producers: Micro-ferme les Enracinées (Saint-Placide), Coop Pied De Céleri (Dunham), Fleurs et Feuilles Gourmandes (Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu), Chez Birri at Jean-Talon Market, Opercule ponds (Ahuntsic), Simon Le Champignologue (Brossard), and many more. This commitment to hyper-local sourcing is unparalleled.

🍷 The BYOB Advantage

Othym remains proudly bring-your-own-wine. There is no corkage fee, allowing you to perfectly pair your meal with a favourite bottle. The owners even recommend picking up a bottle of Quebec wine from their friends at Expérience Bière up the street to complete the local experience.

Why You Should Go

Because Othym is one of Montreal’s best tables, period. It offers a rare combination: a deeply philosophical commitment to sustainability, a creative and delicious menu that changes with the seasons, and the incredible value of a BYOB establishment. You leave feeling that you have participated in something good, something delicious, and something uniquely Montreal. Long live Othym.
