🍱 Restaurant of the Week: La Chronique

📍 Address: 107 Rue Laurier Ouest, Montréal, QC H2T 2N7

It is rare in Montreal that an address survives more than 20 years. Since opening in 1995, La Chronique has not only survived—it has thrived. This beloved Laurier Avenue West institution continues to charm customers daily who are looking for a quiet evening where the quality of the dishes is always present. It remains one of Montreal’s best chic restaurants, best French restaurants, and a perfect spot for a Sunday date.

Atmosphere & Décor

La Chronique moved to its current larger location in 2013, allowing the restaurant to reinvent itself while maintaining its timeless essence. Chef-owner Olivier de Montigny designed the sleek, contemporary, and sober space with the help of architect Charles Coté of Mu Architecture.

White walls, white tablecloths, and a staircase with a warm wood railing create an atmosphere of elegant, understated luxury—beauty in all its simplicity. The house also offers a private table for eight for business lunches or dinners, and a 24-seat private room for wine events and group gatherings.

🍽️ What to Order: French-Inspired Excellence

In the kitchen, Marc De Canck and Olivier de Montigny prepare one of the best menus in the city, featuring French-inspired cuisine that changes according to the seasons and what is available. Consistency and rigour are the order of the day.

Tasting Menu Options:

  • Five-Course Savoury Menu: A curated journey through the chef’s vision.
  • Seven-Course Savoury Menu: For those with a larger appetite, a deeper exploration of the kitchen’s talents.
  • Menu du Marché (Lunch): Widely considered one of the best lunch deals in town.

House Classics (Often available à la carte):

  • Homemade Foie Gras Plate: A signature starter, rich and decadent.
  • Sweetbreads: A classic French preparation, executed with finesse.
  • Scallop Plate: Delicate, perfectly seared scallops, a perennial favourite.

Notable Philosophy: The in-house savoury menu changes daily depending on what is available at the market. And everything is homemade—from the bread to the ice cream.

🍷 Drinks to Match

Wine is part of La Chronique’s DNA. Olivier de Montigny and in-house sommelier Jonathan Sitaras are responsible for an extensive list with many references for all tastes and budgets. Food and wine pairing is one of the restaurant’s great strengths, and they put enormous effort into it.

The restaurant also boasts an impressive selection of scotches and whiskies, thanks to Marc De Canck’s personal passion for the spirit.

Why You Should Go

Because La Chronique is a Montreal landmark for a reason. The service is truly professional—you are treated like royalty here. It may not be a trendy spot, but it is definitely one of the best addresses in Montreal where you can be sure that you will eat very well.

As Olivier de Montigny says, “It feels good when people recognize our hard work. Every night, it’s either Marc or I. We’re always there. The restaurant business is exciting, but it’s also demanding. We’re proud to have been here for so many years and still have satisfied customers every week.”
