The Genesis of Ichigo Ichie

Ichigo Ichie was brought to life in 2015 by Kevin Fung, who first introduced Montrealers to Yokato Yokabai, one of the city’s best ramen spots. The inception of Ichigo Ichie was serendipitous; when Fung signed the lease for the ramen restaurant, it included additional spaces that sparked the idea of creating an izakaya. This concept quickly materialized into Ichigo Ichie, a place designed to celebrate the joy of shared meals and the subtleties of Japanese Cuisine with a Quebec twist.

A Culinary Haven in the Plateau

Located at 360 Rue Rachel Est, near Metro Mont-Royal, Ichigo Ichie is more than just a restaurant; it’s a cultural immersion. The establishment prides itself on being Montreal’s premier izakaya, offering an authentic taste of Japan. The menu, developed by Chef Tsuneko Hirata and assisted by Rie Gonohe, is a testament to the richness of Japanese Cuisine, infused with local influences and a commitment to organic, MSG-free ingredients.

A Menu That Celebrates Diversity

Cold Dishes

The cold section of the menu features a selection of sashimi and tartare dishes that are as aesthetically pleasing as they are delicious. The Salade Daikon, a mix of assorted vegetables, tofu, tempura, bonito, nori, and a tangy umeboshi vinaigrette, offers a refreshing start. Yuzu Tuna Tataki marinated in yuzu wasabi dressing and Hamachi with tomato mayo dressing, ponzu, and sesame stand out as flavorful options that honor the delicate taste of fresh fish.

Hot Plates

Turning up the heat, the menu’s hot dishes include Yakitori, perfectly grilled chicken skewers with umami sauce and Japanese pickles, and Gindara, featuring marinated wild black cod in yuzu miso. The Fuji Miso Buta, pork shoulder steak with apple miso butter sauce, showcases a rich, savory fusion of flavors.

Fried Selections

For those who appreciate the crispier side of Japanese Cuisine, the fried section doesn’t disappoint. The classic Takoyaki, octopus balls with okonomiyaki sauce, Moriawase Tempura, jumbo shrimp, and vegetable tempura are to be noticed.

To Snack

Lighter fare like Miso Shiru, a miso soup with tofu, wakame, and scallions, and Shio Edamame, sea salt soybeans, are perfect for snacking or complementing the main courses.

Desserts

No culinary journey is complete without a sweet ending. Ichigo Ichie’s desserts, such as the Matcha Tiramisu and Mochi Donuts, infuse traditional Japanese ingredients into classic desserts, creating unique and delightful treats.

An Atmosphere of Warmth and Invitation

The ambiance of Ichigo Ichie is a harmonious blend of traditional and modern design elements conceived by Montreal designer Michel Prete. The interior features exposed red brick walls, wooden floors, and Japanese paintwork, creating a cozy and culturally rich setting. The space is divided into two main areas, accommodating around 160 guests, making it an ideal venue for group celebrations and intimate gatherings.

A Commitment to Authenticity and Quality

Ichigo Ichie’s dedication to authenticity extends beyond its menu. The restaurant boasts Montreal’s most extensive selection of Japanese cocktails and sake, ensuring that there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The Natsu Sangria, with a Japanese twist, and the Ichigo Tonic, a gin-based cocktail with grapefruit and cucumber, are particularly notable. The bar also offers a selection of Japanese whiskies and beers, including the famous Sapporo and unique options like the Nihon Negroni, blending gin with Aperol and nigori sake.

The dining experience is complemented by a festive atmosphere, curated by manager Chun Taing, who oversees the cocktail and wine lists.
